Der IFA F 8 ist ein Pkw des Industrieverbandes Fahrzeugbau der DDR, der als Weiterentwicklung des fast baugleichen DKW F 8 zwischen 1949 und 1955 hergestellt wurde. Der F 8 steht in der Reihe der DKW Frontwagen, die 1931 mit dem F 1 begann, dem ersten Serienfahrzeug, in dem der Frontantrieb erfolgreich eingesetzt wurde.
Der IFA F 8 hatte den 0, 7-Liter-Motor der DKW-Meisterklasse, der seit1933 weitgehend unverändert die DKW-Frontwagen antrieb. Er wurde nach dem Krieg im Motorenwerk Chemnitz produziert. Zur Technik des hinter der Vorderachse eingebauten Zweitaktmotors mit Schnürle-Umkehrspülung gehörten Thermosiphonkühlung und der Flachstromvergaser H30 der Berliner Vergaser-Fabrik. Die Kraft wurde über ein Dreigang-Getriebe (mit sperrbarem Freilauf in allen drei Gängen) auf die Vorderräder übertragen. Gestartet wurde der F 8 mit Dynastart ? einer Kombination aus Anlasser und Lichtmaschine.
Der Motor wurde mit geänderter Drehrichtung und erhöhter Leistung im AWZ P 70 weiterverwendet und diente als Grundlage für den bis 1990 produzierten Trabant-Motor.

The IFA F 8 is a passenger car from the GDR`s Industrieverband Fahrzeugbau, which was produced between 1949 and 1955 as a further development of the almost identical DKW F 8. The F 8 is part of the series of DKW front-wheel-drive cars that began in 1931 with the F 1, the first production vehicle to successfully utilise front-wheel drive.
The IFA F 8 had the 0.7-litre engine of the DKW master class, which had powered the DKW front-wheel-drive cars largely unchanged since 1933. It was produced at the Chemnitz engine plant after the war. The technology of the two-stroke engine with Schnürle reverse scavenging installed behind the front axle included thermosiphon cooling and the H30 flat-flow carburettor from the Berlin carburettor factory. Power was transmitted to the front wheels via a three-speed gearbox (with lockable freewheel in all three gears). The F 8 was started with a Dynastart - a combination of starter motor and alternator.
The engine was reused in the AWZ P 70 with a modified direction of rotation and increased power and served as the basis for the Trabant engine produced until 1990.
